The country of Honduras has been on quite a journey to get their coffee industry to where it is today. Coffee has been present in Honduras for many decades but only became a largely exported crop in the 90’s. Most of the Honduran coffee was used for commercial use leaving them behind in the specialty coffee scene. As their neighbors Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua were breaking onto the specialty coffee scene, Honduras was still primarily doing commercial work. This led to many Honduran farmer’s smuggling their coffee into Guatemala to sell for a higher price. The current industry is improving opportunities for Honduran farmers, allowing their coffee to be sold as specialty coffee without crossing borders.
