Coffee has been present in Guatemala for many years, but it didn’t gain traction as a large export until the late 1800’s. As the coffee industry grew, it needed some regulations. Thus, the Asociación Nacional del Café, or Anacafé, was born. Many countries have similar organizations that provide regulations on coffee processing and exporting. One thing these organizations do is improve traceability. After the coffee is harvested it is sent off to be processed. Many processing plants wanted farmers to meet a minimum quantity to be processed. Because a majority of farms are small and family-owned it could be hard for them to meet these minimums. Farmers resorted to grouping up in corporations to send their coffee off for processing. This grouping meant that the coffee couldn’t always be traced back to its farm of origin. While the government’s coffee organizations work to improve the coffee industry in other ways, this is one of the problems they helped address.
